A relaxing walk in the forest through a snow covered forest singing an original musical poem about the ethereal yet harsh beauty of Winter and Snow. Still cold is needed to bring seeds back to life. And Winter is the season. It is inspired also by the figure of the "Snowmaiden" that is so frequently found in fairytales and mythology. As a child I was impressed by tales like Japanese Yuki-Onna, Norse Goddess Skaði's or even the Snow Queen by Danish author Christian Andersen, and though both legends portray a cold hearted dangerous beauty I wanted to portray it in a more benevolent manner, because though Winter is often found harsh and cold, it also activates the seeds so they an regrow. Móðir Mín Í Kví, Kví is a traditional Folk song from Iceland, and a rather creepy lullaby. Icelandic lullabies are famed for being somehow mysterious, spectral or frightening and this one has a well known ghost story as background that you can read at the end of the video. Song is very old and there are versions of it already written in 1800 and a version closer to mine in 1890, thus Public Domain. There are many lovely versions around, it's such a beautiful tune in my opinion. The recording is very minimal, using only voice, harmonies, low whistle and kantele (national Finn music instrument) as the lead. I tried my best to pronounce well the words but I'm not native so my apologies if pronunciation is not 100% accurate with all my respect to Finn Heritage :). Song is a lullaby about a wag tail (Motacilla alba). Can you count how many scenes the bird appear in? WHAT IF WE RISE... ...from THE UNDERLIVING? "The Aftermath" is a song included in "The Underliving", it's linked to other songs "Storm" and "The Wind song" and it is about the stillness after a storm that is perceived as lifeless and how it summons again the wind. In The Underliving the sounds of the wind is one of the ways this creatures communicate with the living. I played here quite a lot of instruments: kantele, psaltery, flutes, bowed glasses, koshi chimes, hammered dulcimer, jouhikko, tibetan bowl, oscar tribalthunder, and wind is made with an double ocarina and a windband roarer to create this eerie yet pacifying atmosphere.

At that age I found out I was not a girl anymore, I had to grow up and leave the safety of my inner world and start to be aware of the mundane reality. I felt like a captive bird, the bars of an invisible enormous cage around me, but still trapped. My castles fell, my kingdom vanished and I started to be afraid of forgetting all the magic things I had imagined. All around me was new and hostile, boiling with people that couldn’t really hear me, and all I longed was to be back again in my shell. At the end of the song I portray the pacifying happiness of abandoning myself into my own world of fantasy out beyond the furthest end, far away… ©2004 |
