The Origins of Christmas trees and Xmas Worship + a Sad Fairy Christmas Fairytale

yule fairy - by priscilla Hernandez (yidneth.com)-3.jpg

As I told in my previous post some of the posts I will share in December are going to have a very Christmas or Yuletide (Winter) vibe. I am myself a December child as I was born mid December, so for me it's a very special time of the year, a time of new resolutions.

I write this article to draft a glimpse of the background story behind this tradition of using "Evergreen" during the closing of the year, Winter or Yule. But also I take the chance to say how sad is that millions of trees are chopped just for the sake of this tradition. If you must use a real tree, please consider to buy it in a pot instead of chopped off, even deprived of light it might make it if you plant it again after the festivities are over.

There are always ways to do things with balance.

I understand that for some people this is a very important tradition and I respect... I only call for moderation... There will be always be debate as Faux plastic trees are a poor alternative and also rise another kind of environmental concern... so as I say there are pros and cons... still sharing just my personal approach and then moving on to the origins. I'm also aware of the jobs that it provides in rural areas but there is something very sad in a "clone forest" perfectly programmed to be consumed, used and thrown away.

As for me, trees belong to the woods (not farms), growing and living

yule fairy - by priscilla Hernandez (yidneth.com).jpg

That is why I always take a fallen branch from the forest floor or use a tiny faux tree as ornament. Most of live Christmas trees that are sold as objects have grown for over a decade just to be used and neglected after a handful of days. I also cover one particular sad XIX century fairytale "The Fir Tree" by Danish author Hans Christian Andersen (who wrote also The Little Mermaid) which actually contemplated this very thought almost two centuries ago and that broke my heart at a very tender age. I include a synopsis and a link to a full read of the tale (now public domain) at the end of the article. I want to say that this is my personal opinion, and I'm not trying to preach anything to the ones following this tradition but always a call to moderation, because as usual things are getting environmentally out of hand (even Amazon will sell live trees this year) and vast surfaces in protected rainforests being replaced by Christmas tree farms, which is just sad. It could be argued that fake trees in fact (most of them ) are made of plastic which are even worse for the environment... but still we can be recycle it many years or be creative and use other materials like paper or fallen foraged materials from the woods. Growing 10 years just to be adorned and then cut down or burnt after a few days is sad. There are some that can be replanted and come in pots, but people usually want the bigger more sumptuous one. More than 30 million trees are cut down and sold in USA alone each year. Oh but they plant trees right... yes but that land takes away from wild forests land with higher diversity... so yes, there are pros and cons. and again this is just my opinion and is not intended to generate debate, keep on reading because this article is not only about my personal opinion but about the origins, stories and curiosities behind this tradition.

The Origins of Christmas Trees

christmas tree evergreen - by priscilla Hernandez (yidneth.com).jpg

The origins of of Christmas trees date to pre-Christian era, for thousands of years evergreen plants (mistletoe, holly) and trees (pine, spruce, fir) has been used during winter as "promise" of the life to come after the bleak winter, and thus keeping evergreen plants (including holly and mistletoe) is meant to brighten our spirits during the stark bare winter. They are symbols too of everlasting life.

Boughs of evergreen would adorn the doors of houses to keep away evil spirits.
It was considered in many cultures that the Sun God was weaker or ill during Winter. Egyptians would use evergreen palm rushes. Old Vikings also provided special powers to evergreen plants for the same reason so did the Druids of Ancient Celts.

Evergreen plants were used by Romans in Saturnalia Festivals (17th -23rd of December), and also by countries in the far North of Europe who used Evergreen as a token of "hope" during the bleak Yule and usually included December and January. Nowadays Yule starts 21st of December (Winter's Solstice) and last for 12 days... those are the 12 days of Christmas. There is no real evidence of Jesus being born the 25th of December though it felt sensible to adapt the already existing "Pagan Winter Feast" as after the Solstice days become longer and they could relate it with the light of God entering the World. But just to say date was picked as convenient and not as accurate

Christians later changed this meaning of "evergreen" to represent the everlasting love of god. And thus Yuletide became Christmastide.

xmas.jpg

Impressions of Yuletide season, the green and reds, and holy another evergreen used in Chirstmas that also date back to pre-Christian traditions.

First Christmas Trees as we know them were originated in Lavonia (now Latvia and Estonia) and placed in the Square for everyone to enjoy. First indoor trees are usually placed in Germany.
Later on Martin Luther , 16th-century Protestant reformer Luther was credited for starting to decorate the trees with "candles" to resemble the trees against the starry sky. This was the origin of the Christmas Tree lights (despite a very dangerous practise that was finally replaced by safer electric lights in the XX century). If you are a traditionalist and still use real candles on your tree, never leave them unattended... custom was responsible of a great deal of unintended casualties though no electric light can replace the warm vibe of those vintage Christmas Trees that our ancestors remember.

The origin of tinsel and the story of the Christmas Spider

As for the famous tinsel , the word means spark and before being made of plastic it was extruded from real silver hammered into a thin foil and then cut into strips.
It is believed that the idea of tinsel came from the sparkling frosted cobwebs. And thus in many European countries spiders are considered good luck and are related with Christmas this way. There is even an Ukrainian folk tale about the "Spider of Christmas Cobweb" that tells the story of a very poor family that found their bare Christmas tree all adorned by iridescent cobweb woven by the spiders during the night and how they never felt poor again grateful for the gifts life had provided them. That is why some ornaments are shaped as cobwebs, especially in Ukraine where the legend is originated. I will talk more about this in another post as I have a collection of frosted cobwebs I've made myself, but meanwhile it's not difficult to imagine how tinsel was inspired by it.

Oh Christmas Tree: The Christmas Carol

The Queen's Christmas tree at Windsor Castle (Illustrated London News, 1848) Steel engraving, Public Domain, Link

"O Tannenbaum" (literally "The Fir Tree") is a german traditional folk son which origin can be tracked back to the XVI century though was provided the modern lyrics by Ernst Anschütz in 1824. The song that now we know as "Oh Christmas Tree" was not related with Christmas but to the evergreen quality of the fir tree to represent the faithfulness in love. And thus "true" was replaced by "green" in the English translation as it became a Christmas song. There are many English variants. But I'll include here an excerpt of the original.

O Tannenbaum, o Tannenbaum,
wie treu sind deine Blätter!
Du grünst nicht nur zur Sommerzeit,
Nein auch im Winter, wenn es schneit.
O Tannenbaum, o Tannenbaum,
wie treu sind deine Blätter!

O Christmas Tree, O Christmas Tree,
How steadfast are your branches!
Your boughs are green in summer’s clime
And through the snows of wintertime.
O Christmas Tree, O Christmas Tree,
How steadfast are your branches!

Hans Christian Andersen tale: The fir Tree (very sad fairytale, very real though)

fir tree andersen - by priscilla Hernandez (yidneth.com).jpg

Above an illustration of The Fir Tree in one of the Andersen compilations I own

For me one of the saddest and more pessimist fairy tales that Danish author Hand Christian Andersen ever wrote and one that as a child (as Andersen was the first book I ever owned) made me opt for a faux tree or just a fallen branch token. Childhood trauma about Christmas trees... ;-) But still a must-read.

The tale is about a fir tree anxiously looking to grow up, aspiring to grow tall, and it is told as if the tree has a will and awareness. And as sparrows chant of trees in warm rooms with decorations and being worshipped, the tree longs to be cut... until one day it happens and feels the delight of being admired with all the decorations then to be abandoned in a dark room.

That night many people gathered in the room around the little fir tree. They sang and told stories. They placed gifts at his feet. And the fir tree, trembling with joy, listened to the stories they told.
"I wonder what will happen tomorrow?" he thought. He longed for the next day to come.
The people returned the next day. This time they removed the popcorn and the candles and the dolls and the angels from the little fir tree's limbs. Then they lifted him up in the air and carried him up a flight of steps, into a dark, airless room.

And there in the attic is left forsaken, withered in the darkness until one day it's taken outside, and the fresh air reminds it of the forest, but then it's chopped and burnt...

Did I mention this was a traumatic fairy tale for me as a child? This was likely the origin of my conviction. LOL You are warned... if you are curious it's just a short read and as it's Public Domain it's available at Project Gutenberg Online Library at this link:

My Christmas Decorations

So here a snippet of my usual Christmas Decorations that will go up of course with Fufunchis. It's just a small faux tree, something symbolic and humble.

The Power of Christmas / Yule Spirit transcends our beliefs

yule fairy - by priscilla Hernandez (yidneth.com)-2.jpg

I confess I'm not religious but spiritual, and also I'm not pagan but I celebrate Yule, The Closing of the Year. For me it represents the Wheel of the Year coming to an end, also Winter's solstice is the shortest day, but also the day light starts to return, days will become longer as Winter reigns... such contradiction and quandary... that the "dark season" is precisely the bringer of light.
And wether you are religious or not, whatever your beliefs are, this is a season to reconsider what we've done during the year, to build new resolutions and determinations... The year closes and it's always a time to think thoroughly of what it has yielded... To start afresh with new dreams and resolutions, to fix whatever we did wrong... It's a time of new hopes and new chances... As weather turns cold outside and we spend more time indoors it is a time to organize, to enjoy our family and friends along with a hot mug of chocolate. It provides a reason to gather, to go home, to hug our beloved, to be giving...

So if you ask me if I believe in Christmas Spirit, as an excuse to bring us together and remember the power of kindness, yes I believe in its power.

yule fairy - by priscilla Hernandez (yidneth.com)-6.jpg

I wrote in my own song Grow

As seasons flow,
once more it all
turns bare and cold
but save green in your heart

And that's all the green I need in Winter

Hirvi and family: befriending a family of Deer

doe young deer - by_ - Priscilla Hernandez.jpg

Above:Are you happy to see me? My "deer" friends: Hirvi's daughter all grown up into a beautiful doe. Proud dad behind her just a few days ago.

Still not over the Steemfest flu but after two weeks of coughing and feeling unwell I knew what I needed to recover was to connect back with Nature, hug a tree, smell the damp forest floor. So I have been going out these last few days, but I'll keep some of the hikes for another post. Grounding in Nature is the best way to heal it, I swear, I felt it clearing my lungs. Yesterday we also hiked and enjoyed the beauty of this moody Autumn season.

So, for the above reason, some days ago  me and Héctor (who seems recovered from the bug) and I went to feed my "deer" friend Hirvi and his family, that we have been befriending for the last year and a half. They all came running to us like puppies as soon as we stirred close their living area. They already know we often come visit with treats. The baby fawn is now all grown up into a beautiful young doe and ate bread for the first time. I swear she was smiling all the time enjoying the new flavours, and so excited about it. Mum doe ate lots of carrots. Proud stag looks like a crowned king with the antlers fully grown, a true Guardian of the Forest

hirvi guardian of the forest - by priscilla Hernandez (yidneth.com) - Priscilla Hernandez.jpg

He is the only one that still keeps a distance to us, but each time he gets nearer and already enjoy apples and carrots. I am still with bronchitis (SF3 flu gone bad) but feeding the animals and walking in the little pine woods did me well. They are tame but still wild. Same with the sparrows I feed every morning.

Why Hirvi?

I usually name all my pets and animal friends with Finn names, still apparently as a friend from Finland told me I may have called him "moose" instead of deer XD, but after two years he's keeping the name even if not accurate ;-)

Last Spring the family had this new baby, few months ago it was still drinking milk and was sporting the cute fawn spots like in this picture:

Cute baby fawn

It's incredible how big it looks now, and just like her mother, sister and father knows us... she's learning to trust. She was literally smiling while eating bread (first picture in this post). For me it's a healing experience. I truly believe in empathy. I love to feel she knows she is safe with me.

My deer friend: Majestic Hirvi

hirvi - by Héctor Corcín.jpg

Hirvi is a deer we befriended a couple of years ago. He is featured in one of my music videos, "Grow". At the beginning he kept the distance but as time has gone on and our visits with carrots and treats became often, we gained his trust. Last year he had a baby doe and last Spring a new fawn was born too. Some days ago we visited to find out this little baby girl all grown up and ready to conquer our hearts with those big brown doe eyes of her. Now the family is comprised of four: Hirvi and the mum of the two young does.

Above: My song and videoclip "GROW". Hirvi appears at 1:51 Filming another video where he will be more prominently

I am vegetarian and very much against hunting (please, I appreciate no discussions about that in comments, that's not the purpose of this post), I've grown to love these this particular family and relieved they live in a protected area with a reasonably sized pine grove to roam free, but I know it also becomes harsh for them during winter up there so we will make our visits more often. I am very proud to know they have had cameos on my music videos too. I will be returning to visit them and I feel fortunate to be able to get really close. I'm in fact writing a song about "wilderness and innocence" inspired by them. I am also cleaning my desktop to start painting again... and I'm very inspired to do a drawing of them. That way they will be part of my own magic world in a way.

Looking into your eyes

Moments like this are magic... to see ourselves reflected in these eyes full of bewildered wonder. To be witness so closely of their feelings and emotions is a gift. Can you see me and @hedac in them?

Note: fun fact... the little grove where they live is full of sculptures carved in wood... and there is now one that looks exactly like me hahha :) They keep on adding new ones but I wonder... as I usually go there sometimes even dressed in my fairy garments... LOL
Still... a bit of a resemblance right?

Come Little Children (Hocus Pocus OST) Making of + hiking / locations and more...!

The Witch in the Woods

Halloween is drawing near and the veil is getting thin...

Every year I do a Halloween special and this was last year's Hocus Pocus but I am resharing it now along with the photoshoot, making of and locations

so get ready for some eerie entries this October... :). Video was done last Fall, but many of the pictures have been recently edited and are shared now for the first time. Sharing here a special creepy little music video I made for Halloween last year as I am preparing a new seasonal special for this one. In the mood for something slightly eerie? This post also includes photo shoot, filming locations, and lots of pictures!

Are you in Halloween mood quite yet? Do you usually celebrate it?
Are you plotting your costume already?
There will be some "Special Spectral entries" as Autumn is here now in its full glory with its mysterious mists and fallen leaves.
Press play to listen / watch the video featuring several locations in Spain and France.

the witch in the woods - by priscilla Hernandez (yidneth.com)-6.jpg

Who remembers this movie?

Hocus Pocus is a fantasy seasonal Halloween movie that was released in 1993 by Disney. Featuring a trio of Witches (The Sanderson Sisters) the movie is lighthearted and fun entertainment, but there was an eerie haunting moment, darker than the rest of the film by its tone and meaning, that stayed with me longer, and that was the moment Sarah, the blonde haired witch (how appropiate) uses her power, her sweet voice with which she is able to lure unfortunate children into her lair... just like a Siren.
So as a collector of movie scores, my main and major influence in my own music, I have been picking some "classics" from my childhood and giving them a spin within my own style. And thus here I'm sharing my own version of the soundtrack.
So do you remember this movie?

Hocuspocusposter.jpg

Fair use, Link

It was indeed a commercial and critical flop back in the day but slowly it became a cult classic. Apparently there is a sequel about to be released too after so many years. I remember it with fondness though and some scenes like Sarah singing this song are quite vivid in my mind... It is now a seasonal classic of my generation, so well drop also your impressions if you remember or have watched it. If not, this is the perfect month to have a look at it!

I put a spell on you and now you're mine

But this post is more than about the song but also the hikes and behind the scenes of this little creepy video I made as Halloween special. (Preparing another surprise for this one) as we get into the mood for the forthcoming All Hallows Eve. Despite being blonde myself and having a "similar garment" than the character that sings it I did not pretend to cosplay the character but tell a different kind of story (darker in mood) than the original take... I am curious about your own interpretations.

The veil is getting thinner...

Lyrics

"Sarah's Theme" is one of the sung and most iconic tracks in Hocus Pocus Movie score with music by James Horner; lyrics by Brock Walsh inspired by Edgard Allan Poe; performed by Sarah Jessica Parker in the movie. Additional variations were made by who was in charge of most of the instrumental soundtrack of the movie. The theme also known as "Garden of magic" and has become a rather well known seasonal Halloween classic. There are longer versions but the original lyrics (very short) are these:

Come little children, I'll take thee away,
Into a land of enchantment.
Come little children, the time's come to play,
Here in my garden of magic.

Credits

Original version

Credits: Sarah´s theme was composed by James Horner and variations and rest of the movie soundtrack by John Debney http://johndebney.com/. Lyrics by Brock Walsh.
John Debney was kind enough to listen to my version and send back a compliment which I found so encouraging. This is just a tribute cover and it' was not an official release, I always recommend to purchase the ORIGINAL soundtrack but I enjoyed recording this as it was a challenge was a good practise to improve my hammered dulcimer playing :) and thus it deviates quite a lot from the original arrangement.

I loved your rendition, it sounded great John Debney (Hocus Pocus OST composer and conductor)

Filming locations

the witch in the woods - by priscilla Hernandez (yidneth.com)-7.jpg

The abandoned decaying ruins of a former village of miners of Arruitzgain on Basakaitz Mount (Spain) served as main background to film the video... There used to be also a train (Plazaola) to transport the minerals from this area that has been of mining interest since the Romans settlements in the area... And at the beginning of the hike you can choose to go over the now deserted rails and tunnels. Then there is a hike uphill while while enjoying a forest of long and slender beech trees. I filmed this exactly mid October last year but the leaves hadn't fully shifted into autumn colours quite yet (thus we used color correction in the video to make it moodier)

early autumn forest - by Héctor Corcín.jpg

The mining village was abandoned in the fifties and barely a few buildings tumbling down and emerging chimneys and walls over the engulfing and lush vegetation and they look much older while a thick pad of moss, vines and blackberry bushes have covered the walls.

the witch in the woods - by priscilla Hernandez (yidneth.com)-4.jpg

It felt convenient that there was a fireplace in one of them... oddly enough with signs of recent use, maybe one hiker took the remaining building structure as shelter.

the witch in the woods - by priscilla Hernandez (yidneth.com).jpg

Don't worry, I don't eat children, I'm vegetarian ;-)

We also collected some wood in order to create that uneasy feeling of "Witch in the Woods" as I was intending to do a video for the song "Come Little Children" anyway. I always try to release a Halloween special, whether a cover of Halloween classic like this, or an original... so already working in this year special Halloween release. The early autumn filtered light was perfect and I found a perfect witchy staff out of a wooden stick.

After filming we stayed in the woods until dark... you had to be careful as light got dim you could easily for into hollows like this

the witch in the woods - by priscilla Hernandez (yidneth.com)-8.jpg

bank_bertiz_priscilla hernandez.jpg

El Señorío de Bertiz also in Navarra (Spain) served as additional location including the spooky shot at the end wearing a mask I made out of a piece of bark I collected from the floor. It's a place we often visit and hike that I will cover in detail in one of my "hiking adventures" posts. But here a clear still of that "eerie ominous ending". I decided to add a spooky reverse effect to finish. And well , I think I succeeded in my "spectral" makeover.

WITCHINTHEWOODS.jpg

Additional scenes were added filmed on or hike to the mountaing Midi dOssau (French Pyrenees), some general scenes of autumnal elements and small waterfalls and conveniently filming scenes dressed in black like casting spells in different spots on our ascent. Yes, I hiked with a corset up to the Pyrenees and here is proof!
I even got into thef freezing mountain lake but I did not use that footage in the final edit of the video.

Farewell to Summer at Xorroxin waterfall: Last Summer Days with fellow friends

xorroxin waterfall - by Priscilla Hernandez (yidneth.com)-2 - Priscilla Hernandez.jpg

Above: me wearing my Spanish Luna Moth wings by Xorroxin Waterfall (Navarre, Spain)

Last week my friends Estela and Nalian came to visit and our first hike was to visit this well known waterfall and pond in Navarre, Spain. We parked in a little village called Gorostapolo. The village is very small and there are some days you will have to park in the previous village, Erratzu and walk a mile or two from there. From Gorostapolo is a very short hike of just about a mile through the woods.

Me and fellow adventurers of the day Estela, Naliam and me (instagram usernames in pic)

There are wetlands with mud so proper hiking boots are recommended as the trail can get very slippery.

forest trail.jpg
Some shots of our hiking trail, pics taken with my phone

I think there were goblins concealed from our human eyes... though their disguise sometimes failed a little bit... Can you spot the goblin in this picture? I think he was not very pleased I got him on camera, haha!

xorroxin - by Priscilla Hernandez (yidneth.com)-6.jpg

Can you spot the goblin in this picture. A pareidolia is when you can find shapes and faces where they are not meant to be

So me and my friends followed the hiking trail to reach two waterfalls, the first one is smaller and then the well known Xorroxin Cascade which is a smaller exact replica of the bigger one. The year before I came to this very place as I almost missed the fact the big waterfall was just some meters away but you can hear the unmistakeable roar of the water falling and if you continue you reach the well known Xorroxin cascade splashing over a glorious and very deep pond.

xorroxin_smallandbig.jpg
Small Xorroxin and big Xorroxin... some hikers think it's the small one but you have to go on for the real deal

I had packed my Spanish Luna Moth wings Graellsia Isabellae in my rucksack. Graellsias Moths are present in this region. And I usually and conveniently dress in green (shifting to golden and brows for Autumn now). So I just had to take them out for these pictures. The wings were made by a clothing brand run by some fellow designer friends El Costurero Real. They have been running for over a decade creating fantasy clothing and we have collaborated many times. Next October I'll perform a concert for their new store opening in Barcelona.

Graellsia Isabellae or Spanish Luna moth is a very rare moth that lives in this area of Spain I live in. Difficult to spot but amazingly beautiful.

My beautiful friend Estela Naïad also tried the Graellsia wings. Isn't she a gorgeous prerraphaelite fae?

Autumn is here now... and as if weather knew we have shifted seasons everything is cooler and moodier... Still I don't lose hope of some warm days to come to swim on fresh waters... Though it seems likely this was my last time during this season. Somehow though, I'm looking forward the colder weather, it always activate my creative juices, more indoor times along with a hot mug of tea... days of painting and creating music ahead... But we warned, rain can't keep me away from the woods during weekends :) So there will be many autumnal and wintry adventures to come!

Me taking a bath... Water was FREEZING brr but invigorating... I will miss swimming in freshwater creeks and ponds

This time my partner Hector Corcín  stayed at home, or maybe he was that Charming Prince in disguise...

Later that week me, Héctor Corcín, Naliam and Estela performed together along with Enrique Galdeano in a local Oak forest to celebrate the Autumn Equinnox with an outdoors concert and performance, but that I will cover in a forthcoming post :)

And to finish the article a mosaic with impressions of the day

I went to see the Moon but I found a thousand fallen suns

priscilla Hernandez sunflowers - by priscilla Hernandez (yidneth.com)-9.jpg

Posting today as part of colorchallenge WEDNESDAY YELLOW challenge

All this pictures were taken last Saturday (late July 2018). Me and my partner Héctor Corcín  went on a stroll trying to see the Moon Eclipse that took place last 27th of July. Sadly clouds didn't allow to appreciate the eclipse in its full red moon glory and we only caught it as the Moon grew back to full brightness again, but we found this location and we went the day after to take these pictures featured in this article.

eclipse.jpg

So even if weather boycotted a little bit our sighting of the Blood Moon, at least it worked to find this lovely location. Above, not the best eclipse picture but what we glimpsed :)

Location and filming for forthcoming video

Location is close to an abandoned village called Guendulain (Navarre, Spain). To see the sunflowers spreading and just the ruins emerging from them was rather magical. As we had just found it the day before and I am finishing editing a videoclip of Latvian folk song Līgo (encouraged by fellow steemian friend Linda from Latvia, who encouraged me to learn a song of her country). It is a overall a worship of Summer hymn and I had still a few gaps in the video so location was perfect to shoot some final scenes). I will share that here shortly but meanwhile here. Almost done, I will share it soon.

Enchanted sunflower, thou
Who gazest ever true and tender On the sun’s revolving splendour

Pedro Calderon de la Barca (Poet)

A symbol of strength, endurance and loyalty

They look like thousands of fallen suns blooming in Summer... so yellow and vibrant, a representation of our life giving star. The petals of a sun flower are also known as "rays" for that reason. Unmistakable with their brilliant and vibrant appearance and amazingly large size. There are different varieties of different sizes but some are as large and tall as I am, glorious giant flowers.

priscilla Hernandez sunflowers - by priscilla Hernandez (yidneth.com).jpg

As to give a sunflower to your beloved it represents warmth, long life and endurance. Sun flowers remain in full bloom for a long time enduring the hottest days of Summer and tolerating lack of rain and droughts. The upright and strong stem also represent the strength of bonds and loyalty. It is usually given as a gift on the 3rd anniversary of a wedding.

I love a sunflower and I believe in love power
(Tears for Fears, quote from the lyrics of "Sowing the Seeds of Love")

priscilla Hernandez sunflowers - by priscilla Hernandez (yidneth.com)-5.jpg

Vitality, hope, renewal... LIGHT

It was worshiped by Incan Empire priestesses who used to wear replicas made of gold in their garments.

In China, Royalty used to eat sunflower seeds in order to have a long life and are related with vitality and luck. In China in fact they are a symbol of *lasting happiness" The symbolism of "yellow" colour that I covered in previous article also apply for this "light bringer". It is easy to think why these flowers are usually associated with "happy" feelings.

They are not only strikingly beautiful but also useful providing and numerous edible sunflower seeds (at least the most common Helianthus annus which we grow for that purpose) and oil for cooking and beauty treatments. Crops and fields of these beauties, also a symbol of "abundance".

Sunflowers also known for their symmetry based on Fibonacci numbers

Sunflowers belong to the family Asteraceae and genus Helianthus (helios=Sun, Anthos=flower) and they move and stretch moving towards the light by phototropism. or heliotropism. Sunflowers are one of several plant species that make optimum use of light by turning to face the sun. It is like a "solar tracking" triggered in fact by phyto-hormones (Auxins) presents in the stems. This happens until the flower is "mature" and the seeds begin to ripen. Then they usually stop growing and droop downwards and stop their movement.

But let's explain it in a more romantic way

Clytie in Green mythology was a water nymph (daughter of Oceanus, the Water god and Tethys) that turned into a flower grieving over here unrequited love for the God of the Sun, Apollo (son of Zeus), and thus she is always facing the sun looking for her love return for her in his Chariot. She fell in love with him but was ignored by Apollo who fell for another Water Nymph (Daphne). Clytie sat on a rock and spent nine days without food or water until she transformed into a flower, and even to this day, she keeps looking at her beloved sun from dawn to sunset. Thus sometimes Sunflowers are used as symbols of "platonic love". At the beginning the Greek legend transformed her into a turnsole (Heliotropium) as in fact all sunflowers (Helianthus) are native from America, but modern retelling and famous Victorian and Prerraphaelite painting used "Sunflowers" to represent the grieving nymph.

clytie - by priscilla Hernandez (yidneth.com).jpg

Although Clytie's love was not corresponded as Apollo fell in love with Daphne due to an Eros (God of love) arrow, the irony of it is that he was despised by Daphne who wished herself to be transformed into a laurel tree not to be bothered by Apollo unsolicited love. Apollo had an argument with Eros and he was struck by an arrow who made him fall in love with the water nymph but Daphne was hit by a lead arrow who made her despise Apollo as strongly as he loved her. Finally she prayed for help to her father and was transformed into a laurel tree. Apollo was heartbroken and remained faithful and it made laurel leaves "evergreen" because of his love.

Poor Clytie, if it had not been for the interference of love arrows...

Dandelions are floating in evergreen fields...

dandelions - by priscilla Hernandez (yidneth.com)-4.jpg

The meaning of the dandelion flower is a promise of faithfulness. Their resistance echoes endurance. Dandelions are related with purity, innocence and nostalgia. I share this appreciation post for these lovely ubiquitous yellow flowers. It's a post that will end up in a very personal note if you care to read until the end. These small and considered insignificant by many are maybe my favourite flowers and you are going to know why.
In Spain we call them "dientes de Leon" (Lion's teeth) from which "dandelion" word comes from.

dandelions - by priscilla Hernandez (yidneth.com).jpg

And splatters of a myriad of yellow blooms show the path I will follow (from my song Sentinel)

A common flower not lacking importance or meaning

dandelions - by priscilla Hernandez (yidneth.com).jpg

Properties

Dandelions belong to the genus Taxaracum and Asteraceae Family, being the most common *Taxaracum officinale" (common dandelion) also known as Lion's tooth, Irish daisy, blowball, puff ball, cankerwort, doon-head-clock, witch's gowan, milk witch, lion's-tooth, yellow-gowan, monks-head, priest's-crown, and puff-ball and other less romantic names as common pee-a-bed

The entire plant, roots, leaves and flowers are edible. There are evidence of their use as food as medicine since Prehistory. The roasted roots can be used to make a caffeine free drink. Flowers too can be added as ornament to salads, and the heads are used to make wine and liquors, petals are used to make dandelion wine with sugar, yeast and citrus fruits peels. It has several medicinal uses mostly as digestive aid or to boost liver function, and it's available as tea, tincture and capsules. Of course if you forage dandelions make sure you don't take them from your local park where they can be covered in pesticides... wild meadows or grow your own as seeds grow easily on your garden or pots. There is evidence it helps to manage sugar and lipid levels in animals who eats them. And it has phytonutrients that can help to prevent cancer as well as many antioxidants, Vitamin A and C. It's used also against inflammation. It is also very diuretic... I wonder if the French word Pissenlit (wet the bed) is related to it. Medicinal use is considered safe though allergic reactions should be checked as it's possible though rare.
You can also get yellow and green dye out of them... I particularly like to dye my clothes in nature colours.

Yes they are common... and that's why very often underrated. But as you see they have a wealth of properties... Also being among the first flowers appearing in Spring they're key for the survival of bees. Next picture is one shared recently by my partner @hedac on his feed and featuring a cute bumblebee frolicking with dandelion pollen. :)
Even the most common flower can have such an enormous importance

Bumblebee on dandelion. Macrophotography courtesy of @hedac

As it can easily colonize an area it's usually considered as a weed by many gardeners, but I think they are absolutely beautiful. It really makes me sad when local gardeners come with the land mowers to get rid of them and get their perfect "polished" but spiritless grass... As much as may think of these little blooms a nuisance my heart is happy to greet the yellow dots on the green grass.

A symbol of sheer joy

A symbol of joy and faithfulness and of course of light. For Native American was a representation of the Sun being the petals the rays of the Sun at the beginning of Spring. It is not difficult to guess why... they look like little glowing sun... and it strikes to me then than they are like stars in the green meadows... painting a starry sky where you can run, and dance and jump and remember how you loved to do so when a child and how your inner child still loves to do it.

Above: Me barefoot jumping and dancing on a dandelion fields

Endurance

A symbol of endurance they are also perennial and bloom a rather long time. Endure!
You will often find them growing even in cracks on the pavements... a reminder of life thriving

dandelions - by priscilla Hernandez (yidneth.com).jpg

No life is free from struggles... but we learn to live. Treasure the moments of peace, the moments of health, the moments of happiness...

You're only a dream away, my sweet Kira

As I mentioned at the beginning of this post it's a flower related with faithfulness and what's more faithful and loyal that your dog companion. It's the flower I usually relate to my Siberian Husky Kira (1995-2003). I always dream of her running in her favourite fields full or yellow blooms. She has one song in each one of my already published music albums. And whenever I mention "yellow blooms" in a song is a hidden clue related to her. So I recurrently dream I am in a field full of dandelions and that she appears... sometimes I chase her I am slightly aware she's gone and I am dreaming... that is when usually my dream become lucid. I will write more about her soon but I had to mention.

Dandelions are floating in evergreen fields
Those yellow flowers incoiling to buds
gently inviting to sleep
Good Night Kira

kirapreciosa.jpg

Here is a drawing I made myself of me and Kira... the drawing is made on a watercolour background where I pressed too a real dandelion flower from those fields she used to love.

So through the years the "fields" became like a private place I go when I dream... And because of my longing (and mourning) there I can see sometimes also my fufunchis (my rats) and all the animal companions that blessed my life... That is a place I go often in dreams to be with them... But when I try to chase them they usually scattered in different directions... I feel still the urge to protect but at the same time I'm aware I am dreaming and that I need to let them go
But there they are waiting for me.

I let you go, I let you leave
though I shall wait for you
all life long
till the end and beyond

If I could describe Heaven that is the dandelion field where I play with you

I love you

ritva spring - by Priscilla Hernandez.jpg

So if you could make a wish...

We all have picked those fluffy seeded flowers, those silver tufted blowballs, and have made a wish...

Blowing and scattering the seeds into the winds we make our wishes travel. Do you know they grow on every continent? Such travelers those wishes are too.

Have you ever tried to blow one?
If it's not the right time you have to blow hard... even in that they teach a lesson. Be patient!

So if you had a wish... what would it be?

I'd wish that place of my dream to be real but as I cannot rewind time... I will wish for a home. Home is not a roof, is not a place, it's a shelter of the soul, a comfort of the spirit, a sense of belonging. That is why up to this day I call Kira and fufunchis my home...
But as long as I keep moving forward my feet will lead me ahead...
I'm sure I'll find my way home

The ruins of Eugi

Above my videoclip  Off the Lane was in part filmed in this location, but I've returned to this place COUNTLES times... and here is an article about the place.  I love to bring my friends here when they come to visit. The blog post mix old and recent pictures. :)

Follow me and enter the Ruins of Eugi, one of my favourite places to visit in my area

Eugi Priscilla Hernandez - by priscilla Hernandez (yidneth.com).jpg

Located in Quinto Real forest, a lush beech wood in North Western of Navarre (North of Spain). Eugi was the oldest of the two Royal Munition Factories that can be found in the region. I already covered Orbaitzeta in a previoust post but Eugi is smaller in size and a century older. The remains run over Arga River and are dated in the XVI century.

The smithy closed one century after being built when it ran out of materials, which led to the construction of Orbaitzeta

eugi interior - by Priscilla Hernandez (yidneth.com)-8.jpg

The archs are similar to the ones we find in Orbaitzeta, as the latest was built as a bigger replica after Eugi had exploited the resources around it at the time.
Now the forest is fully recovered and protected... and the whole factory (and its ugly purpose) engulfed by lush vegetation and damp moss. Beneath the archs there are spots where the water covers up to your waist. Cold and hyaline, the whole place is purified. Nature has won this round. The remaining walls and archs are silent witnesses of the flowing of the seasons.

eugi interior - by Priscilla Hernandez (yidneth.com)-12.jpg

Eugi is really well preserved and ruins can be found two sides of the road... archs, walls, all covered in vines and ivy. Like the remains of old fairytale castles...

eugi interior - by Priscilla Hernandez (yidneth.com)-5.jpg

Being further from any populated area and having had 100 years more exposed to the elements than its bigger sister Orbaitzeta, Eugi is already one with the forest.

Eugi Priscilla Hernandez - by priscilla Hernandez (yidneth.com)-6.jpg

At some spots the structures are so concealed that it's difficult to make the man-made parts out... as it seems to be entwined with growing plants. Especially at this time of the year, where weeds crawl and cover everything in green. In autumn and winter, the whole place is more conspicuous but then veiled permanently by fog and mist. Temperature here is usually cooler, and if we continue up the road we will see Mount Adi crowning the beechwoods.

eugi interior - by Priscilla Hernandez (yidneth.com)-6.jpg

This is a place I come often. I filmed several scenes of my videoclip and song "Off the Lane" here and being one hour drive from home I come to visit this forest rather often.

eugi interior - by Priscilla Hernandez (yidneth.com)-4.jpg

Below: A still from when I filmed my videoclip. This photo is much older than the rest included in this article. Sadly this part is now being restored so they have added a fence and it doesn't look like in this picture. The rest of the images are fair recent.

Eugi Priscilla Hernandez - by priscilla Hernandez (yidneth.com)-4.jpg

As I have said before I have a fascination for abandoned places, their romantic and almost decadent beauty... how they shift sometimes into something new and beautiful when it's claimed back by Nature.

Eugi Priscilla Hernandez - by priscilla Hernandez (yidneth.com)-7.jpg

I love to see the ruins now integrated with the forest... Quinto Real is home of deer and boar and it's frequent to see vultures in the sky. Spain has 80% of vultures in Europe. In autumn is not rare to see the blurry silhouettes of deer or boar cloaked in mist... Those are the "ghosts" that now inhabit the ruins of Eugi.

Here I come often to feel inspired... I compose songs with the rustling sounds of the leaves, the chirping of birds... songs that grow in the filtered green light that is reflected on the water...

Gifts from my friend Kelly Miller Lopez and article about BEAR OR WILD GARLIC flowers

Above: Me wearing all the gifts from a dear friend and laying on a field of wild garlic. Story and article about Wild garlic below. All pictures taken last weekend (20h of May) where I lay on a carpet of wild garlic flowers

I have been sharing too also my love for Nature. There is a series of article blog posts I have been sharing called "The blooming series" and here is another entry :)

A surprise box full of love from a dear friend

As introduction of this post I wanted to say that these year has been a bit complicated for me. So my friend Kelly Miller (singer from Neofolk band Woodland and solo project Rosa Mundi), my sweet fairy sister from overseas sent me a surprise box full of "love" to cheer me up.
I opened the parcel and the first thing I found were Rowan berries added for its protection (and it did made it safe all across the ocean that separates us) and a necklace made out of them. There was a note inside...

so you don't forget the Goddess that you are

I started sobbing... I have not felt that well these past few months and I confess I have felt everything but so...
I know she also refers to "Yidneth" my story... my alter ego almost... She wishes me well and strong... special
And I try not to forget... I dried my tears and kept on exploring that little box from so far away... She often hums to me back my own song Don´t be sad. As if I needed someone else to utter my own words.

So the rest of the box had more treasures... a moon silver circlet made by herself and a matching moon choker, and the most gorgeous organic cotton green lace dress... Of course it had to be green. She knows me well.
And finally some chocolates and candy (pear, my favourites).
All the little details and notes... It was like if a Fairy Godmother had put there a dress for Cinderella. But Cinderella had to do her chores a little bit longer and was very tired to attend to the ball... She probably missed it, but as forest nymph I prefer a solitary dance beneath the shady canopy, that at this time of the year shines almost fluorescent green as newborn leaves unfold into lush green

A picture of  Kelly and me And Showhite and Rose Red (Grimm Fairytale) (I love you tons!)

So the box awaited for the right moment, just some days ago... And they made a magical transformation, just like Cinderella but from the inside...

The Spring Forest

Last weekend as usual I hiked with Héctor,  and we stumbled upon a lovely location. I had brought the gift box with me, because I wanted to send my friend some pictures of me wearing the gifts she had bestowed upon me, and I don't mean the dress or the crown, but the confidence, the love and her thoughts for my well being an protection.

I hurried to try it on, the light was getting dim and the moment was fleeting but we managed to take these shots.
The aroma of wild garlic was strong... and there I laid until the last rays of golden light engulfed the forest floor in darkness. All was covered in white pallid flowers... These posts are about blooming after all... but flowers are sometimes just the metaphor.

allium ursinum - by priscilla Hernandez (yidneth.com) - Priscilla Hernandez.jpg

Above: A carpet of blooms... Allium Ursinum growing on a beechwood in Navarra (May 2018)

These carpets appear usually on damp but well drained soil in deciduous forests protected by the shade of the canopy when the new leaves grow in Spring. I confess I would always chose and prefer a wild flower over a garden cultivated one... :)
I love hiking and I do every weekend... It heals me... I have posted about forest bathing before... I always feel rejuvenated afterwards.

Wood Garlic or Bear's garlic

Priscilla Hernandez lunula - by priscilla Hernandez (yidneth.com)-5.jpg

Alium ursinum also known as "wild garlic", "bear garlic" or "ramsons" is a bulbous perennial plant native of Europe and Asia, belonging to the Liliaceae family and relative to the chives. They have semiespherical umbel-like inflorescence that holds up to 20 star shaped white flowers clusters on leafless stalks. The leaves are born from the bulb itself. They bloom mid Spring and early Summer. The species spread by rhizomes and self-seeding forming these amazing colonies on the Spring forest floor.

Culinary use of Wild garlic

allium - by priscilla Hernandez (yidneth.com).jpg

The small elongated bulbs are a favourite of bears, that is why its latin name is Allium Ursinum comes from Ursus (Bear) as brown bears use to dig for the bulbs that they find invigorating and it helps to cleanse toxins after their winter slumber).

Wild boars also love them. Sadly bears disappeared recently from my region forests but there are still boars. Deer usually ignore them and dislike the taste.

The whole forest floor was covered with them like a tapestry! And the smell of garlic was noticeable. Both leaves and flowers are edible and can be used in salads but you have to be careful not to mistake them as there are similar plants that are poisonous like Lilly of the Valley or Wild Arum (Lords and Ladies) . In case of doubt the smell of garlic in Allium Ursinum is unmistakeable and distinct if you pick one of them. Their taste is a mix of onion and garlic. Dry leaves can be turned into crisp snacks. You can even boil the stems and eat them as spaghetti, once cooked the taste is less pungent. In many European countries soup is made of it (the same way nettle soup is done) but a cream-like pesto is also popular for seasoning. Usually the bulbs are too small for cooking so only the leaves are collected and once it's in bloom they can taste already a little bit bitter. In the XIX it was given to cows so the milk used to make butter would taste slightly like garlic. It was also told to protect the cattle from disease as it can protect against viruses. Then it was removed precisely because of the flavour as it lost popularity. There are evidence of foraying these flowers since the Mesolithic.

Medicinal properties

allium ursinum - by Priscilla Hernandez (yidneth.com).jpg

Eat leeks in Lide March and ramsins in May
And all the year after physitians may play.

(XVII century proverb)

It is very known for this reason and its medicinal properties in Ireland to ward off respiratory diseases like flu or cold or even to apply on wounds. In Ancient Greek it was used also against snake bite, and a myriad of uses is reported all throughout the countries it grows in. It is a heart protector and blood purifier, detoxifies and improves digestion helping in stomach problems and even skin disorders as it boosts our immune system. They're properties are even stronger than the domesticated garlic relative and it was named "Plant of the year" in 1992
They have been proved to lower your risk of cancer and other chronic diseases, including arthritis. It can be taken orally or also applied as ointments and poultices.

And the most important thing of all ;-)

In folklore they are told to be used to bring good luck as it deters fairies and goblins.

And remember Mother Nature is wise and giving. Be grateful.

PD: I have been told that this happens also in the British Isles with bluebells, sadly we don't have them here (North of Spain) but I would love to behold such glorious spectacle one Spring.

Orbaitzeta: Old Munition factory turned into Tolkien elven Halls

Nature can transform everything... even an industrial munition factory into a fantasy scenery... A little imagination can wipe out the ugliness and transform it into an enchanted location.

As I mentioned in my recent article, I have a fondness for ruins and abandoned places. I find them very eerie but melancholic and romantic... I think places are haunted by desolation and disuse but in some cases they are transformed into something magical when overgrown Nature claims them back and this is the case of Orbaizeta.

Above: Orbaizeta archs. My photo entry to the contest. Archs over Irati River (Navarre, Spain)

Orbaizeta is a village located in Aezkoa Valley (Navarre, North of Spain) about 5 Km away from the French Border where you can find the remains of the XVIII century Royal Factory of Arms and Munitions of Orbaizeta
It was in fact built over a XV century old forge located over Irati river.
The whole place is now abandoned and taken over by Nature. It is located over Irati River and by Irati forest, one of the largest beech woods in Europe. The factory was precisely built here to use its wood and water after the older Royal Munition factory (Eugi, also located in Navarre) run out of resources due to over exploitation.

For almost a hundred years it provided munition and supplies to the army, iron and lead and even canyon balls, but it felt into disuse after the death of the Spanish king Carlos III . As it was very close to the border the site was frequently pillaged and caught fire many times to finally be shut down and abandoned in 1873. The ruins have since been covered by moss, lichens and vines. The main structure still stands and has been declared Site of Cultural Interest.

The place was overrun with trees and has become shelter for small animals. The archs that remain mostly intact over the river look now the remnants of an ancient Elven Fortress out of the pages of a Tolkien's book.

Below: Me in these damp mossy ruins... I love when Nature claims abandoned places back. Despite its not very romantic origins and industrial function the actual ruins have been strikingly transformed by Nature into fantasy Elven Halls... A magic portal to a fantasy realm... This is what they are NOW for me.

Orbaizeta - by Priscilla Hernandez (yidneth.com).jpg

Enigmatic and now almost mystical looking, it stirs with new life... as birds perch on the scattered trees, lizards lay on its stone seeking the warmth of sun and little voles hide in the bushes. A recovery process is now under way but somehow I think there is a romantic vibe of the place engulfed by overgrown vegetation. Some years ago when Héctor and me visited this location you could access and walk it entirely but after a few accidents due to the decay of the structures the place has very limited public access now until being restored.

Black Legends about Orbaizeta

Its otherworldly eerie aspect reminds me to a distant past or maybe even a dystopian greenpunk future. It's not strange many claim it is haunted. A common target in several wars (as a factory of guns close to France) it was sacked and burnt out several times... And that violent imprint stayed in the minds of many tainted its memory. The place has a mysterious aura and it has inspired several local novels, mostly modern thrillers and mystery like "The Factory of the Shadows" by Ibon Martín which begins with a girl hanging from the archs on a misty night and the research of the case. Curiously after being chosen as background of these murder the skull of a missing hiker was found in its surroundings causing great stir on the national press. All of these has impregnated the place with darker tones but the truth is that it's rather peaceful and the way the light is filtered through the plants and is cast over the river is really entrancing.

Eugi, an even older munition factory in the same province

There is another old munitions factory, very similar but older and smaller in size even closer to me called Eugi, it features the same structure, with archs over a river. But I will cover it in another article, there I have made too countless photo shoots and even filmed part of my music video Off the Lane. The Eugi factory when active exhausted the forest around it and that is why the Orbaizeta was built.

eugi factory yidneth priscilla - by Priscilla Hernandez (yidneth.com).jpg

Above: One picture from last Summer taken in Eugi Factory, a smaller (and older) "replica" of Orbaizeta but located in Quinto Real Forest and over Arga River. I only post this picture so you can see the similar structure though humbler in size. I will cover Eugi in another article in the near future.

Conclusion: One with Nature

As a Nature Lover I am glad to see the woods around both factories now recovered, both rivers now hyaline and crystalline and its ugly original purpose of Royal Munition factories long time gone... Their structures are engulfed and becoming one in the forest... It reminds me to the movie "The Princess Mononoke" by Hayao Miyazaki, that tells precisely the story of a munitions factory destroying the forest and finally claimed back by its guardian. The outcome is almost the same. Though there are now some programs for the preservation of the ruins they lay now in perfect harmony with the environment. They are places full of peace now surrounded by slender beech trees and gurgling creeks.

And with a little bit of imagination... these former human constructions are now almost magical

The Ice forest: Fantasy photoshoot and making of

It´s so cold when North Winds blow
bringing hail and pearls of frost
That´s the way that you do chill me to the bone

(Lyrics from my song Flame)

In Spain there is a beautiful world, "Cencellada", for this particular meteorological event. I think the English translation would be "rime". It happens when it's misty and Temperature drops drastically and the water vapor and droplets in the fog freeze quickly. The result looks like if everything has magically turned into ice, a glass-looking forest covered in fragile frost needles and scales (sometimes showing the direction in which the wind blows), and trees turn absolutely white as if made of standing snow... It looks magical and so ethereal.

Gauzy and Fragile like thin ice (from my song Ethereal)

As you know as a fantasy musician and illustrator I also find inspiration and enjoy doing fantasy photo shoots. It was the first day of 2017 and despite being extremely cold Héctor and I wanted to celebrate doing what we love the most, hiking out int he Wilderness. We usually work as a team, he enjoys scenery and landscape photography and I love to dress up in fantasy costumes (as my music and art is inspired by fantasy and fairy tales). So as we drove up the mountains everything started to transform, the mist vanished and pale, white slender beech trees loomed out as we entered into a "Frozen World".

What we found was even more rare and especial, and this is likely one of my favourite photoshoots ever. I hope you feel the magic of the moment too through them. I have never shared them "together" day, so writing this blog post also was for me a lovely way to revisit a cherished memory.

-It is very cold. -@hedac said... Are you sure you want to go for it? (He knows I would reply "Of course")

It was bitter cold, -10 ºC and wind chill factor made it felt much lower. I am a person that takes baths in the river in late Winter so I can endure cold weather rather well but as I was undressing I felt it "cutting my skin". So there I was putting on a corset not wanting to miss the chance. I made the cloak and skirt myself. I had a white thin fabric I often use for my stage performances. I had been gifted a wonderful mask, crafted by Vincent Cantillon, and happened to have a white dress in the trunk of the car (as somehow we were expecting to find a place with snow). Lucky!

Wind lifted the veils in odd ghostly shapes. The word is haunting.

We took plenty of photos and lost track of time until there came a moment I felt my fingertips had hardened (literally) and went completely numb. I stopped feeling my hands entirely and I felt a slight trigger of alarm, so that was the moment to halt and go back to the car.

-"I can't fight the keys of the car" -Hector said as he started to look around and in his pockets.
I panicked a little and started to shiver. I had no coat or gloves. It took a little time until he did hahah and those were looooong minutes for me.

Below: A mosaic of "behind the scenes" and highlights all taken with my phone including me and my poor fingers! Happy and cozy after I had warmed up with the car´s heating and hot tea (A thermos flask is a must for this kind of adventures). I hope you find the photos worth. My hands did hurt quite a while but I love to have been able to be part of that fairy-tale moment.

After we were comforted we ventured up again to film some footage, and a blizzard compelled us to drive back home, but not before we could make some very dramatic videos for our music projects.

All pictures are taken with my phone except the ones I'm appearing in, that were taken in collaboration with @hedac and edited by myself. He took amazing shots that day as well that I hope he shares his too. Next one is also from my phone (not quite as spectacular as the ones he did but you can make an idea).

Since, we have been waiting for the weather to replicate this elusive meteorological event (rare in my region), to find again a door open into this magical Ice Frozen Woods. We visit the location in Navarre, Spain always shifting along with the seasons.

A little fairy visitor in my music studio... and a little reflection about transformation

´Cause I cannot stay within
This motionless netherworld
Within my chrysalis cold

Will I emerge like butterfly into the vibrant daylight?

Those are words from my song "At the Dreams Door" that was featured in my second album The Underliving.

As you may have already noticed I love fairy tales and fantasy. Not only my music and art nourish from it, I have a collection of illustrated fairy tales. I simply love all those XIX and early XX illustrations with fairies and princesses in my magic attire... :). Reading fantastic stories with a hot mug of tea, one of my favourite thing to do on moody rainy days.

So I was away hiking  recently with some friends that were visiting when @hedac made a phone call and told me he had found a little butterfly in the  music studio. It had been born from a chrysalis that came along with a purchased plant. The little creature had perched confidently on Héctor and and refused to leave on that chilly and rainy day. So the butterfly got all cozy and was our "fairy" companion for the day, cleaning its antennae with its fore legs, perching on our hands... we were mesmerized and for a few hours we forgot all about our daily tasks to take pictures and film it.  So small, and yet so magical... I'm always amazed by the patterns in the wings. As an illustrator I find it so inspiring so I made a few doodles on my sketchbook. I confess I like  moths over vivid colored butterflies and I feel more inclined to the muted colors of moths.  Maybe because I am myself kind of mousy. But this little butterfly also had these brown earth moth colors... I wonder what kind of butterfly it is, if any knows  let me know to edit it and include the species. :)

I find metamorphosis such an outstanding and inspiring metaphor of TRANSFORMATION

So why sharing this personal moment here, because I wanted to speak about change...

we fear change...

Sometimes we feel the need but we refuse to change... we get stuck in our old habits thinking that "changing" would be betraying some rigid and frozen convictions we have built about ourselves, about who we are. We smother ourselves keeping our thoughts inside a pre-made grid because it is what it feels safe... This is the way we usually do things so it's "comfortable" to keep on doing the same. We even feel guilty when the need of change becomes blatantly obvious.
I always say... "Thoughts are boundless" We should not have to feel fear of what comes next... if we "open our eyes" we can peek what lies ahead... It is not like moving forward blindly, but still there comes a moment where you have to take risks and nothing ever changes unless we give a first step... I know, it´s difficult for most of us, for me too, thus I write these motivational posts, they are also self-reminders. I can be bold and brave sometimes, but I also have moments where I'm beset by doubts and fear... fear to change!

And why do we fear to change? I guess we know that sometimes this transformation is a time where we feel like stalling, slow, trapped... The process is not immediate, it takes time, effort, energy.
Hatching from a cocoon is a hard and very delicate time until we can unfold our wings and get ready to fly...
If not... ask this little fellow! :)

We can change for the better and that is not betraying ourselves...! We decide who we are, we decide who we will be.

And maybe there comes a time where we need to transform into something better, or more correctly something different to fulfill a purpose... and that doesn't mean we are betraying ourselves or our work... we evolve, we grow, we transform and on our journey and sometimes we become something different than what we were when we started... still being OURSELVES. And the same with our goals and dreams... they shift too along with us.

We must acknowledge our mistakes and learn from them, but we must do it without self-punishing ourselves for having committed them but being proud of have been able to overcome them. Every struggle we have had to undergo has already changed us... They have made us stronger, and more aware.

What lies ahead is always UNCERTAIN, it has to be that way... but still we must fly away

**Mood: Becoming...!

Above: me with our visitor... I even filmed some scenes for a forthcoming music video, for a little while she was our "starlet" and model. I say "she" cos it´s a fairy princess in disguise... Then it vanished into thin air... we kept opening the door the following days so we hope it found its way out. Grateful for the magical moment you provided and the thoughts you evoked :)

Pd: In my head I'll imagine my little friend like this... hope it made it somewhere safe. This other photo is another butterfly enjoying the lovely outdoors on a warm Spring day...

Who is longing and yearning for Spring? and butterflies?

But wait! almost time... all around me is changing and transforming too... all awaiting to grow!

Untrodden paths, finding our own way...

Sharing some pictures of me, taken last weekend. As you may know already, besides music and illustration I love to hike in Nature and create Fantasy inspired photography as a way to tell short stories (sometimes motivational).

It is chilly outside... It may snow again tonight! We are all summoning Spring but Winter is still sitting on the throne...
But every season has its own magic, I love the way snow can transform everything overnight. I somehow welcome and need that "change" too... It is like when you wake up and everything has been covered by clean and pure white snow so you can walk on a new untrodden path. You can set your course, chose your way... Every possibility lies before you. And I am sure many of you will understand what I mean. ;). Maybe even the footprints that you leave will help others to follow.
Dare to venture... our souls are wild...!

Is there snow where you live?

Photos of me taken by Héctor Corcín  February 2018. My fantasy photography is usually in collaboration with him (sometimes other fellow photographers as well). We often film on these locations and we use these footage on our own music videos too, so it´s all part of the same project in that way :)

Random fact about me

  • I was born in the Canary Islands, where snow is such a rare event :).

Iberian Wolf... look at these eyes.... don´t look away! Protect endangered species!

Above: Iberian Wolf (Picture from http://defensaloboiberico.org

Canis Lupus Signatus, the Iberian Wolf,  It is a subspecies of wolf endemic  from the North of Spain. Lookt at it well, in its uniqueness! :( Almost extinct once, populations recovered, though it still remains to be vulnerable and endangered.  In the 50´s and 60´s Francoist Government tried to wipe it out and almost succeeded, a few packs saved the species from extinction and it slowly recovered. Still,  despite knowing our past mistake, our Spanish Government still allows the hunting down of a percentage of them each year, not adding the constant "poaching"... when are we going to learn?. Honestly when someone asks me about my political inclinations I've been voting for the animals party since ages, because they still do not have representation. Isn't this a beautiful creature? Well, look at him well, because some time from now it might not be... If we see the number of species gone the last 200 years, it gives me chills of terror

I confess sometimes I watch on youtube footage of already extinct animals.. it´s like I don't want to forget... when you see  the Thylacine moving in film, you almost feel like it might be still somewhere, yet it is not... It is not, EXTINCTION means GONE, FOREVER... even cloning back extinct animals in the near future, would not be the exact thing that we lost.  And once than, they can say "what a pity" but there is no undo button for extinction.

HOW SELFISH WE ARE AS A SPECIES... wild animals belong in the forest, we hunt them down as if they were an unwanted molestation, animals do belong to Nature, it´s us plaguing it.  We have destroyed our environment (and keep on doing it while our blinded race to the point of no return draws to a fatal conclusion). But we still treat a few thousands animals as "plagues" when millions of us fill the Earth with garbaga. If I meet a wild boar, I hike regularly and I have read how to make precautions, I don´t blame the animal, I try my best, in respect to cross our paths in peace (one of the most beautiful experience in my recent hikes was to stumble with a sounder of boar in the mist)... but first option for many, let´s kill it, let´s hunt it, as scientists, we have ways to treat catch and release them with treatments so they are less fertile. There is no need to get rid of them by hunting or killing, it could be done ANOTHER WAY. More let´s get trained about what to do and don´t if we find a wild animal... an teach respect to all creatures, and find SOLUTIONS that don´t imply torturing, killing, hunting and destroying endangered species like the Iberian Wolf is. Aren´t you so smart and clever HUMAN? Don´t you say that something merciful is HUMANE in your language (such a lying concept)... Look at these eyes, don't look away.
